Yarn Design Challenge

The Yarn Design Challenge was a BIG HIT!! I am in awe of everyone who participated. As I walked around the comment I heard most was about how difficult to choose the three favorites.

Here are the three big winners:
And here are all the beautiful submissions.

Thank you again to all who participated and worked so hard on their projects. I am honored to be among you all!

Thursday, March 8, 2012

We will be having our Design Challenge this month. We asked anyone who would like to participate to create something with the colors White, Black, Gray, and Red. It can be an original design or any type of pattern you have. It doesn't have to be a garment, you may use embellishments. The item must have all colors in it and it must be at least 50% handmade. I am so excited to see what everyone will be bringing!

There will also be a Yarn Tasting hosted by our wonderful friends from Knit in Roslyn. We will be sampling several different types of yarn so bring a variety of sized needles and hooks.

We all look forward to seeing everyone!

Freeform Knitting and Crocheting: The Next Step (with Carol Braunstein)
How do you turn your freeform crochet or knitting into a wearable garment? How do you put the pieces together or start making a pattern? In this workshop, you learn everything you need to know, to begin a freeform knit or crochet project.
Materials/Homework: If you have some freeform scrumbles, bring them with you. If not, Carol will show/tell you how to start. Bring 2 different leftover bits of yarn, a crochet hook or knitting needles. Bring paper and pencil and Carol will describe how to start the process of putting them together into something wearable!

Kitchener Stitch (with Alice Dictor)
The Kitchener Stitch (aka. Weaving and Grafting) is a technique that everyone should experience and have in their repertoire. Kitchener is a procedure used for invisibly weaving together live stitches. If you want to learn or forgot how to do it, this would be a great opportunity to try it out.
Materials/Homework: Cast on 10-20 stitches and knit 6 or so rows in stockinette, DO NOT BIND OFF. Leave at least 2’ of yarn. Make 2. Please bring a tapestry needle.

Create Your Loofah Soap! (with Judy Lambert)
What an excellent gift idea! Learn how to create your own
loofah soaps! You will learn how to make soap covered with needle felted jacket creating a soap that acts like a foaming washcloth shrinking as the soap is used. Use as a fragrance for your knitting, linen closets, drawers etc. If you don’t have any of these materials, please feel to watch and join in the fun. Spinners, if you have stray roving/fleece, could you share a bit with us?
Materials: Roving/fleece of various colors, Felting needles, Foam felting pad, Bar of soap.

Beading Techniques (with Angela Monserrate)
Are you ready to add some “bling” to your projects? In this workshop, you will make a sample swatch and learn two different techniques to add beads to your knitting or crocheting projects.
Materials/Homework: With dk or worsted wt yarn make one swatch as follows: cast on 20 stitches in stockinette stitch, do not bind off. Bring one small ball or skein of dk or worsted weight yarn; needle or hook appropriate to yarn; Size C or a .75mm crochet hook. Note: Beads will be supplied for workshop.

Front and Back Post Crochet Scarf (with Joanne DePuy)
